Mr. City Beat

I don't know how many of you read "City Beat," that ubiquitous San Diego publication that lines the doorways of liquor stores and burrito shops everywhere but, I recently discovered that a letter I wrote to the editor a while back made the "Feedback from Our Readers" column.

Yes, in addition to harassing our local councilman, Kevin Faulconer, who hopefully will stand up against a proposed OB "no-booze" zone as part of the new Beach Alcohol Task Force, and my other elected REPs like Congresswoman Susan Davis(D), who's still for "amnesty" by the way if anybody cares, I frequently vioce my opinion with others.

It reads:

Life’s ‘fun things’

Picked up a copy of San Diego CityBeat recently while I was waiting for a burrito here in O.B. and happened along your article, “Do the right thing” [“Sordid Tales,” July 12]. I must say it’s always refreshing to read the thoughts of a person who has that rare air of sanity in this otherwise political-correctness-world run amok.

The thought of raising a kid who doesn’t drink and thus becomes an adult who doesn’t drink is altogether frightening and holds great danger for the future of our culture. Can one imagine a country where a majority has never drank? Combine that with our entrenched penchant for Protestantism (read: religion) and guess what you have? Pakistan or one of those other countries filled with non-booze-drinking religious zealots. For you know that once “booze abstinence” goes mainstream, it will be demonized in the same category as pot, cigarettes and all other fun things life as to offer.

Our culture has an increasingly fearsome way of demonizing all mind-altering or unhealthy things to the point that they become equated with religion, and then it’s all over. Again, look at what they’ve done to pot and cigarettes. Everything’s a “war on this” or a “war on that.” Will we ever have peace? Will the U.N. ever step in and declare a unilateral ceasefire on my pack of Camels or my 4th of July tallboy? Only time will tell.

In short, I loved your piece, and like all things one appreciates, the creator should be told so so that he has the continued motivation to carry forth with his good works. Bravo.
