um they should have used a can instead of a bottle for more credibility.
all that aside, the choice is really with the people. faulconer is getting pressure from the landowners in the area who understandably don't want drunken mexicans brawling in their front yards and in front of their businesses. let him know you have an opinion too or this is going to be really lopsided.
Councilmember Kevin Faulconer asked me to thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on the Labor Day incident in Pacific Beach.
The councilmember respects differing opinions regarding alcohol on the beach, and I will be sure to pass along your thoughts regarding drinking on San Diego beaches.
Sincerely,
Thyme Curtis Council Representative Councilmember Kevin Faulconer, Second District (619) 236-7351 (phone) (619) 236-6996 (fax)

>>> "Jared Moya" 9/5/2007 3:33 PM >>> As a longtime resident of Ocean Beach I find it utterly disgusting that a politician of your self-proclaimed impartiality in the ongoing debate about a proposed ordinance banning alcohol on the beach was so quick to race to the scene of the so-called PB melee on Labor Day and proclaim "peace in our time" via an all out booze ban.
You've stated that "Never again should we have to have police in riot gear walking down the beaches * that is not San Diego," and that "For those who believe an all-out ban is too extreme, I invite you to convince me otherwise."
I liked to first point out that this is an utterly inane statement that has no basis in fact. Never before have riot police stepped foot anywhere on the beaches from PB to OB, yet those of us far down the coastline form our PB brethren are made to suffer for the actions of a few?
Why are you not addressing the real issues like chronic police staffing shortages that allowed an event like this to occur in the first place? Every year its common knowledge where the most drinking occurs, which is (suprise, suprise , I know) PB Drive to Crystal Pier, and every year it seems the police say the same thing - we don't have enough manpower for effective law enforcement.
With a shortage of police we end up with scenarios where things are allowed to get out of control and before you know it we have a situation like this where the smell of tear gas and the shrill of bullhorns fill the air.
The actions of 16 individuals arrested on Monday do not represent the MILLIONS of people who visited and also live in this great city of ours, and to confuse the two may just prove once and for all that politicians do favor style over substance since it seems that the actions of most have become completely devoid of true insight and reflection.
I also find it truly ironic that San Diego is also home to many of our country's largest military installations and brave man and women deployed abroad to defend the freedoms we claim to cherish so much here at home. It's home to tens of thousands of people who are literally risking life and limb in defense of the very freedoms that you seem to be so cavalier in eliminating.
One certainly is prohibited from drinking in Afghanistan and Iraq, imagine their amazement when this list will also include the very shores to which they return.
